Where is Dos Equis’ Most Interesting Man Partying on Cinco de Mayo?
Journeyman Actor Jonathon Goldsmith drinks Dos Equis and Islay Single Malts on his 47-foot Sailboat
Sales of Dos Equis, the premium Mexican Beer have increased since it began ‘The Most Interesting Man in the World” advertising campaign and has propelled actor Jonathon Goldsmith to be a pop culture icon who isn’t surrounded by women and adventure. But Goldsmith, who lives on a 47 foot sailboat in Marina del Rey, California can usually be found at happy hour on his boat, reading, sipping single malt scotch and chasing it with what else…Dos Equis.
He’s married and 72 years-old and “drinks more wine than anything’ he once said in an interview. He struggled as an actor in Hollywood after moving to California from his hometown of New York City. He was what he calls a ‘Jewish Cowboy’ having appeared in over 25 Western films and in the John Wayne 1976 classic, The Shootist, Goldsmith is a villain who meets his death when the hero Wayne shoots him between the eyes.
But if you look close you will see him playing a variety of characters in a roladex full of 60′s, 70′s and 80′s TV shows like Adam-12, CHiPs, Hawaii Five-O, Barnaby Jones, MacGuyver, Dynasty, T.J. Hooker, Magnum P.I. , The A-Team and a total of 45 different TV shows. Fans of the long running primetime drama Dallas saw him the most as he appeared in a total 17 episodes mostly as ‘Bruce Harvey’.
But as “The World’s Most Interesting Man” Goldsmith has brought Dos Equis into Top 25 status, a distinction they achieved with their 2010 sales figures. Nick Lake, vice president, group client director at The Nielsen Co., Schaumburg, Illinois, has called it “arguably the most recognizable beer advertising in the industry.”
Goldsmith was chosen for the ad campaign from hundreds of candidates by the marketing firm Euro RSCG for Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Brewery in 2006. In his auditions he his used his old friend and sailing buddy Fernando Lamas, the Argentinean actor as his inspiration. Lamas, the father of actor Lorenzo Lamas was a fixture for Latin Lover roles and Goldsmith was his closest friend in Hollywood. “Fernando was the greatest swordsman who ever lived. He was an amateur boxing champ and fencing champ, an equestrian, probably the most well-known actor in South America,” says Goldsmith of Lamas. “And he bedded probably every woman, and their housekeepers, in Hollywood,” said Goldsmith.
Goldsmith’s contract runs through 2011 as Dos Equis “Most Interesting Man in the World” and this may be his last Cinco de Mayo as the spokesman for the premium import from Mexico, but not if he has anything to do with it. He and his wife have looked for retirement homes but he’s quick to say, “Not to be used yet”.
Goldsmith added in an interview with Cigar Aficionado, “In a way, this is kind of my swan song,” he says. “This is my legacy. I want to leave a little something. I think this campaign is brilliant-it’s what it’s like to be a man. Most people watch life like a parade and live vicariously through the experience. This guy is a participant.”
