‘Madness’ and Baseball means added sales in March Southwest Florida is as filled as it will get and area bars and restaurants are looking to capitalize on College Alums and fans of spring training to boost sales. Spring training has been a draw to the area since 1925 when the Philadelphia Athletics trained at Terry Park, and Jeff Mielke of the Lee County Sports Authority says with both the Twins and the Red Sox training in Fort Myers, that the area’s top tourist attraction – its beaches and golf courses– receive great exposure from the added media from the U.S. and Japan covering both teams. The Tampa Bay Rays are now in Port Charlotte and it looks like the Baltimore Orioles are leaning toward Ft Myers once the Red Sox’ new stadium is built. The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tourney begins on March 15 lasting until the finals on Monday April 6.
