The Inaugural Art of the Olympians Golf Tournament Tuesday December 4

(BONITA SPRINGS, FL) This  Tuesday December 4, 2012 marks the Inaugural Art of the Olympians College of Life Foundation Premiere Olympian Golf Classic at The Colony Golf & Country Club in Bonita Springs, Florida.

The official start of the three-day event begins Sunday with a private dinner for players and a limited number of the highest charitable donors and all players and contributors have been invited for an after dinner Cigar Social and ‘Meet & Greet’ at The World Famous Cigar Bar.

Gary Sheffield former MLB All-Star will host the ‘Meet & Greet’ event and his Sheffield HR 500 Cigar will be featured and offered to all players and guests Sunday Night from 6-10 PM at the WFCB Gulf Coast Town Center location.

The event was organized locally by  Bob Beamon, the 1968 Olympic long jump gold medalist.  Beamon recruited his longtime friend NBA Hall-of-Fame icon Julius ‘Doctor J’ Erving as the headliner and soon after the field of athletes, actors and celebrities grew.

In just the first year of the event the ‘Art of  the Olympians’ can boast a field of over 50 celebrities that include Hall-of Fame Athletes and All-Stars from multiple sports, and such Olympic Champions as track stars Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner Kerse, Harvey Glance, Ralph Boston, Lashawn Merritt, Will Claye and Justin Gatlin.

Bob Beamon, is the CEO of Art of the Olympians and the1968 Olympic long jump gold medalist whose world record leap lasted for nearly 22 years.

Gold Medal Swimmers Peter Vanderkaay, Rowdy Gaines, Darvis Tarwater and Tyler McGill will also tee it up, as will Gymnasts Carly Patterson and Shannon Miller, who is the most decorated US Gymnast having totaled 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze Medals in her 1992 and 1996 Olympic games.

Even Mike Eruzione, the captain of the historic 1980 US Gold Medal Hockey team will appear. Eruzione, scored the winning goal in the infamous ‘Miracle on Ice’ game vs Russia.

NFL Alumni Thurman Thomas, Nat Moore, Cornelius Bennett, Fred McCrary, Everson Walls, Victor Green, Ki-Jana Carter, Chris Doleman, Mike Vanderjagdt and Ickey Woods are just a few football stars to expect.

 Professional Golfers Lee Elder, Mark McCumber and Bobby Nichols, Tennis Pro Tom Gullickson, NBA Hall-of-Famer Artis Gilmore and five time All-Star Chris Mullen as well as ESPN broadcaster Jeremy Schaap are also scheduled to play Tuesday at The Colony in Bonita Springs.

Golf will become an official Olympic Sport for the first time in history at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.  This Inaugural Golf Tournament will celebrate the blending of these sports arenas and enrich the lives of youth by sustaining Art of the Olympians programs of art, sport and culture through the 2016 Olympic Games and beyond.

ZombiCon Grows and The Galactic Infection is a Three-Day Convention and Street Fest Oct 19,20 &21

For the 6th straight year ZombiCon will brings tens of  thousands of marching ‘dead’ while bringing ‘life’ to Downtown Ft. Myers. In years past ZombiCon was a one day event that in recent years became the most attended annual single event in all of  SWFL.

The 2012 Naples Stone Crab Festival October 26-28

Festivities for the Annual Celebration of the open season on Stone Crabs begins on Friday Night October 26 at Pincher’s Crab Shack’s Tin City location and The Naples Stone Crab Festival has a full weekend of events planned for both sides of the Gordon River Bridge.

Oliva Cigar’s Allan Buelvas visits the ‘World Famous’ Cigar Bar Friday September 21

Next month the World Famous Cigar Bar will welcome  Major League Baseball All-Star Gary Sheffield and introduce his Sheffield 500, a cigar produced for Sheffield by Rocky Patel that commemorates his 500th MLB Home Run.  Sheffield will be on hand for this special edition of the October Cigar of the Month on Friday October 26 at the Gulf Coast Center location.

The rich history of Oliva began when Melanio Oliva first began growing tobacco in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba in 1886.

His growing operations were suspended while he fought in Cuba’s War of Independence. After returning from war Melanio resumed his operations. In the early 1920’s Melanio’s son Hipolito Oliva took over the growing operations. Hipolito cultivated the Oliva family fields for several decades.

As Cuba became over-run by communist the tobacco landscape changed. Hipolito’s son Gilberto Oliva shifted from growing to brokering tobacco. In the early 60’s the pressure became too great and Gilberto traveled from country to country in search of the distinct Cuban taste.

His travels took him to Honduras, Panama, Mexico and even the Philippines. Gilberto finally found fertile ground in Nicaragua. Today Gilberto Oliva, along with his family are Nicaragua’s second largest grower of Cuban-seed tobacco.

Ashton Cigar’s Taste of Excellence is Thursday August 30 at World Famous Cigar Bar

This month the ‘Cigar of the Month’ was already special when it was announced that on Thursday August 30 from 7 to 10 PM,  The World Famous Cigar Bar was holding an Ashton Cigar ‘Taste Of Excellence’ Event that offers smoker’s the opportunity to choose their cigar to match with one of the great single malt scotches. 

On a stop in on the Gulf Coast Town Center,  founder Rich Castiano was reflecting on his 16th visit to the annual cigar industry conclave known as The International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers (IPCPR) trade show. 

There was plenty of great stories and fond memories of the growth of his business and how it has become ‘World Famous’ and certainly the ‘brother and son’ relationships he has forged with cigar families, but there also was a great sense of pride in his two young tobacconists who both passed the qualifications to receive their Certified Retail Tobacconist degree.

“It’s a tough exam, they are young… but they are really impressive and I’m proud of them both” said Castiano. “  Castiano has provided his entire staff from servers to bartenders with the tools and the motivation to understand and embrace the business as he does…from ‘seed to smoke’.

Castiano felt both Sultan Chakkar and Joel Sorrentino were rising stars in their field, and neither won’t forget the most recent IPCPR show held this year in nearby Orlando, when they earned their Certified Retail Tobacconist degrees.  Both Sultan and Joel work on staff at the  World Famous Cigar Bar in Fort Myers, Florida.

“It was a little strange being so close for the convention but I’m glad it worked out and some  smoking restrictions were relaxed to allow the show and all that convention revenue come to  Florida”, said Castiano would has grown his ‘Cigar Bar’ concept to one of the top on-site humidor retailers in the country .”It was extra great that my entire staff and family all got the chance to experience this great gathering every year”, added Castiano. The entire staff was able to attend parts of the 4 day event and they will celebrate by hosting the   Ashton Taste of Excellence Event on Thursday August 30th.
