They were chillin’ it Maui style at at Diamonds Beach Bar in Kihei, Hawaii and in Southwest Florida over 1000 chilled shots started the party that was held at a country-themed ‘party bar’ called the Dixie Roadhouse. In Denver 100 ice cold shots of Jägermeister were served at Herman’s Hideaway and at The Sandy Monkey in Myrtle Beach it just happened to be Bike Week.

Jägermeister USA is celebrating the Five Friday’s of May 2013 with hundreds of parties held across the United States where bars are giving away from 100 to over 1000 free shots of the iconic German liqueur. 

Jagermeister representatives along with licensed bar owners are chilling and serving shots and then snapping photos and posting them on facebook and twitter every Friday during the month of May.

The classic German digestif distilled from 56 herbs and spices was first imported to the United States in 1974 by Sidney Frank, who promoted it as a hidden treasure from the black forest of Germany calling it ‘the best drink in the world’.

Jägermeister’s  worldwide appeal no reaches 80 countries and every continent and the brand has become more than a staple at bars and restaurants, it has become number eight on the list of the top 100 spirits according to Impact International. The United States consumes more Jägermeister than  Germany does now.

Words you hear in advertising that we often think are just another marketing catch phrase, but sometimes you just aren’t sure.

Word will probably travel slower but in less than a week after Maker’s Mark Bourbon announced they were ‘watering down’ their heritage brand of bourbon they have hit the mat and scream uncle.

After a flurry of publicity and a ‘rush to market’ by thousands of drinkers who swore off the red wax dipped whiskey, the company is waving a white flag, throwing their hands up.

Consider it crafty but an accommodating way of surrendering to public appeal and word traveled on a Sunday when Maker’s Mark CEO Rob Samuels chose to take to social media and create more hits, likes and thumbs up by changing his mind and deciding that it would be better to run out…than water-down.

Last week it was Bill Samuels Jr., Rob’s father and the son to the founder of the brand, who told his ‘brand ambassadors’ that he had miscalculated and that he would be forced to stretch out his supply by adding water to his award-winning bourbon.

The plan was to take the brand down a notch from 45 percent to 42 percent and Maker’s Mark drinkers were assured that the change in alcohol content would not affect the taste, but they didn’t care and bombarded Maker’s Mark with disapproval.

Maker’s Mark and Samuels were also the subjects of jokes, jabs and target marketing from other bourbon brands other than Jim Beam who is the mother company of Maker’s Mark since 2005.

“This was about the worst four or five days of my life, and you wouldn’t impose that on yourself unless you were really stupid,” said Samuels, who has been scrutinized by some for creating a marketing ploy.

Grupo Campari, the Italian Company that owns Wild Turkey had already began marketing a Wild Turkey 101 bottle with the tag line, “Less water. More flavor.”

Banned in Canada!

The Government has apparently changed their mind in Manitoba, the province in Canada that is best known for its capital city of Winnipeg but it’s going to be easier to find a Ron Jeremy movie than it will be to find his rum.

Ron de Jeremy, is a seven-year old, 80 proof rum produced in Panama by One Eyed Spirits, and for some reason and has pulled it from shelves and removed it from its stores.

Last month the  Manitoba Liquor Control Commission ordered 60 cases of the rum distilled by Master Blender Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernandez who was selected to create the rum which started as a play on words by One Eyed Spirits a marketing company based in Stockholm Sweden.

Olli Hietalahti is the CEO and founder of Ron de Jeremy, the brand of ron, which is the Spanish word for rum, that bears the likeness of American adult-film star Ron Jeremy.

The project was launched in 2010 and first appeared in the US in 2011 and while it has been marketed as the ‘adult rum’ the bottle or in store marketing shows no connection and makes no reference to Ron Jeremy’s work as one of the most prolific male porn stars in history.

Jeremy who always makes hundreds of personal appearances annually, many of which are associated with the adult industry is a more of a pitch man for the Ron de Jeremy brand.  Jeremy who turns 60 years-old in 2013 and has appeared in thousands of pornographic film has been on-location for bottle signings of Ron de Jeremy ‘adult rum’ and in on-premise night club and Gentlemen’s Club appearances.

ULLR Brings Cool Heat

The roar of  winter is a great reason to fill a flask, but it was a balmy 81 ° with  Gulf breezes when the Florida based tasting team of Beverage Underground chilled shots of ULLR, the Nordic Libation that pays tribute to the ‘god of snow’.

When we first heard of the unique 90 proof combination of peppermint and cinnamon schnapps we were curious, but when we found out we couldn’t get it in Florida…we understood…but we knew we had to have it.

ULLR is a Scandinavian icon, the norse god of skiing and is known as the Patron Saint of Skiers. The image of ULLR on skis holding a bow and arrow, is widely worn as a talisman by by skiers in Europe. As a part of Norwegian and Swedish folklore, Ullr was Son of Sif, step-son of Thor and was a hunter god and considered a superb archer and skier of high speed.

At Ski Resorts around the world you may hear management, employees and guests call on the Spirit of Ullr with a desperate plea for fresh snow, and on the bottle of Ullr, the Spirit there indeed is a ‘Prayer for Snow‘. 

But we didn’t need snow…and all that tasted this excellent balance of ‘fire and ice’ had varied memories of other attempts at hot and cool shooters but it was unanimous that after tasting Ullr, all said they liked this version and said they’d buy it. It was incredibly smooth served right from the bottle and was far more balanced than either of the leaders in the separate flavor categories.

“I don’t drink Rumpleminz or Goldschlager anymore…but I’d do shots of this” remarked one of the ‘blind tasters’ in our taste test.

Florida Couple Creates Florida’s Only Artisan Distilled Whiskey

  Dick Waters has been a plumber, a contractor and a cattle farmer but together with his wife Marti Waters they have brought Palm Ridge Reserve Whiskey to market to become the only whiskey distilled and bottled in Florida. They are the Sunshine State’s contribution to a new breed of artisan boutique distillers with an operation that only produces 500 cases of their high quality 90 proof, Florida Bourbon-style whiskey.

Using Florida corn, barley malt, toasted flaked rye and rye malt,  Dick Waters performs every part of the whiskey-making process in Umatilla, Florida in a small 60 Gallon reflux-column copper still. The result is approximately 5 gallons of premium Palm Ridge Reserve  that is then rested in small 5 gallon charred oak barrels that quickly rounds out and matures the whiskey in less than a year.

Only 500 cases per year are produced and bottled of this non-chill filtered Bourbon-style  whiskey that are mellowed to a profile that features the natural taste of the selected grains with tones of toasted orange and oak woods.   Waters uses four grains, corn, barley, malt, Rye and toasted flaked Rye.

Palm Ridge Reserve Whiskey was really Marti Waters idea and her motivation was to find a way to save their horse and cattle ranch. After reading a magazine article about the rise of handcrafted micro-batch distilleries a couple of years ago, Marti decided to investigate the possibilities.  Dick Waters a former Crown Royal drinker got Marti’s call at work  and their idea, quickly became a dream and a plan was set in place. 

Waters knew he’d need a bolder and more distinctive flavor palate than the lighter, sweeter Canadian blend and he knew that the small batches would allow him to pay attention to the consistency and quality of the blend.

Dick makes his whiskey by taste,  every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in a 10-stall horse barn just outside of Umatilla, Florida which is about 50 miles northwest of Orlando. The stalls now have over 100,  5-gallon American oak barrels  and an8-foot-tall still and 50-gallon drums in addition to Marti’s home bottling operation.

Packaged only  in .750 ml bottles Palm Ridge Reserve Whiskey  is way more than a local favorite and has become a buzz within the industry and can be found on elite bar lists including the one at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel Bar.

Did you know that Frank Sinatra Worked for Chivas Regal but that he drank Jack Daniels.

One of the new releases of the holiday season is not a holiday package at all, rather a tribute to the American Music Icon Frank Sinatra. The Sinatra Select is a Limited Bottling of Jack Daniels Tennessee Sour Mash ‘Sipping’ Whiskey that first launched globally at Cannes, France in October and most recently in Las Vegas on December 12, the day that Sinatra would have been 97 years old.
Sinatra was without doubt the first celebrity to embrace what he called ‘Daniels’ and it was a staple with the Rat Pack  as well as a traveling companion of the Chairman of the Board from the early 1950′s to 1990 and it was  Sinatra that introduced Jack Daniels across the country, not only to bar owners and bartenders, but also to concert promoters who had to have a bottle in the dressing room to the musicians he shared it with after the show.  For many years Sinatra would toast with Jack Daniels as he closed his performances.

Sinatra was never a spokesperson for Jack Daniels and there had never been an agreement with Frank Sinatra to promote the brand until this long term agreement was made with Frank Sinatra Enterprises. In fact following 1990 it was scotch, Chivas Regal Scotch that was Sinatra’s on-stage drink. Chivas was always backstage for guests but became his drink after age 75 when Chivas sponsored Frank Sinatra’s Diamond Jubilee Tour in 1990.

The ‘Sinatra bottle’ is special in it’s design and it’s formula as  Jack Daniel’s master distiller Jeff Arnett,  created “Sinatra barrels” with an extra layer of wood on the barrels’ inner surface that results in extra oak and spice flavors along with hints of vanilla on the finish.

But the bottling is also special because its actually closer to the ‘Jack that Frank Drank’  with the flavor and the boldness that Frank knew and enjoyed rather than the Jack Daniels of today.  The Frank Sinatra bottle is comprised of 90 proof Tennessee Whiskey, which was the way that the Black Label ‘Old No. 7‘ was made until 1987. Jack Daniels Black Label went to 86 proof until 2002 when the black label Jack Daniels brand dropped to 80 proof, the same proof as the lesser known, lesser quality standard of Jack Daniels ‘Green Label‘.

While Sinatra touted the brand it was Angelo Lucchesi that sold it.  Lucchesi was the very first Jack Daniels salesman, hired by D.E. Hap Motlow whose father, Lem Motlow was Mr. Jack’s nephew that inherited the Jack Daniels Distillery in 1907.

Lucchesi recently celebrated his 90th birthday and still lives on as an ambassador of the brand and a treasured member of the Jack Daniels’ Brown-Forman family.  In fact, Angelo was also honored with his own limited-edition bottle of Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7, a recognition of the brand’s first salesman who “helped build the famous whiskey to worldwide fame.”The ANGELO BOTTLE

South Beach Bartender Wins Florida’s Casa Noble Tequila Recipe Contest

Over 25 bartenders throughout the Miami, Tampa and Orlando areas entered Infinium Spirits contest for the right to represent Florida with their recipes and cocktail concoctions  for a  ‘Super Natural Margarita’ .

The contest was open to a limited number of licensed accounts who qualified as a Noble Place that featured Carlos Santana’s exquisite Casa Noble Super-Premium and 100% organic tequila.
