MUSLIM MODEL WILL NOT GET CANING FOR BEER DRINKING

B4K0WRAn Islamic court in Malaysia indefinitely suspended the caning of a Muslim woman for drinking beer during a raid in Cherating, a beach town in Pahang. Muslim model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno was sentenced to six strokes of the
cane for drinking beer at a hotel bar in 2007. Muslims make up about 60% of Malaysia’s 27 million people and are subject to Islamic laws, which make it illegal to drink alcohol. Malaysian clubs and lounges typically serve alcohol and are not legally required to check if customers are Muslims before serving
them. Non-Muslims are free to drink as they please. Ms. Kartika initially refused to appeal, and suggested that she take the caning in public to get it over with.
