SEÑOR FROG’S LOOKS TO LEAP INTO FLORIDA
Popular ‘South of the Border’ Restaurant puts the ‘fun’ in a bottle.

You won’t be getting the chance to enjoy the food or the fun of being there, but when you do get the chance to try Señor Frog’s Tequila, we’re thinking you may change your party plans. Batrachian Spirits has recently released a pair of 100% Agave Tequilas that bear the name of the best-known party destination in Mexico and the Caribbean. Señor Frog’s Tequila hasn’t reached Florida yet, but trust us…you’ll want to save a place on the back bar for this one.
Packaging and Price
We got our hands on a bottle of Señor Frog’s Plata and from it’s packaging to its price point we were impressed, before we broke the seal on the cork finished bottle. From our side, bartenders will like the feel of the bottle, because they’ll be able to pour it on with a full grip unlike so many brands of tequila that have no necks and unbalanced glass. The bottle is more functional than many other premium tequilas and members of our panel immediately noticed the neck and standard sized bottle that will fit on every shelf and the speed rack. Both management and bar staff will like the fact that pourers fit snugly in the bottles saving costly spillage and that the price, is one that consumers and retailers will love. Señor Frog’s is bottled at 80 proof and packaged in a .750 clear glass bottle with a festive and clean design. The packaging takes a turn toward fun with markings along the bottle that imply that the opposite sex will go from ‘ugly’ to ’supermodel’ as the bottle empties. Before we poured and tasted, we were a bit leery of the suggested $25.99 price tag, since most 100% Agave Tequilas are at least $30 and move upward to $70 or more.
Tasting Notes
There were nuances of citrus, smoke and complexity in the nose that held its ground when compared to leading brands, but from first sip we knew that this tequila would be approachable at every angle. A smoother splash on the palate and a richer flavor of tropical fruit took away any burn and then settled to a luxurious finish. There is a slight hint of creamy sweetness that most on our panel preferred when and when compared to other plata or silver tequilas, they seemed lighter in viscosity but bolder in taste than Señor Frog. But while many will seek Señor Frog’s ’smooth’, there are still a percentage of drinkers that prefer and seek that shock to the tastebuds that happened the first time you tried it, and the ‘face’ that comes with many tequilas.
Taking it to the Streets
When we presented the bottle we were surprised by the number of people that had actually been to one of the seven Señor Frog’s restaurants. It was evident that visitors to Mexico and the Carribean already know that ‘Frog’s is fun’ as one guest recalled. We knew we liked it at first sip, and when we took Señor Frog’s Plata out to taste…we wanted to get a sampling of both consumers and Beverage Underground professionals. The results were favorable and when evaluated, this tequila’s taste and package graded as well as any 100% Agave tequila ever sampled. But after we established the taste profile, we told tasters about the $25 price point the word ‘value’ and ‘good deal’ came from both sellers and buyers. One of our stops was to the ‘World Famous’ Cigar Bar and were met with open arms and open minds.
“That’s smooth…I didn’t even make a face like I do with most tequilas’ said Jenn who works day bar at the Cigar Bar Gulf Coast.
Jason Testa, General Manager of the Ale House isn’t a tequila drinker but he had high marks as well. ” I’m not a tequila guy, but I could do a shot of that one, very smooth..I’m surprised. I like that price too”
Jeff from Blu Sushi was surprised at the smoothness as was his girl Courtney and we heard the ‘no tequila face’ comment from several patrons.
The Cigar Bar has a great selection of pure agave tequilas, some best used in Margaritas, and others that are suitable for a snifter. “There is a little smoke and a little pepper at first taste, but there is no doubt there is an added citrus flavor that entry level drinkers will like,” said Cigar Bar Manager Randy Santerfeit who was most impressed with the price. “We’d carry it, and think people would like it, it’s a great tequila at that price point.”
Señor Frog’s Plata is an un-oaked tequila that is double-distilled and medium bodied, while the Reposado is aged four months in white oak which results in a golden color, more complexity and a more full flavor. As of this publishing Señor Frog’s Tequilas are available in Arizona, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. The suggested retail price for a 750ml bottle of Señor Frog’s Plata is $25.99. look for an anouncement when a distributor is named for Florida
